-ly went to Brooklyn to assist in rebuilding the intrenchments on Fort Greene (now Washington Park). He embarked in the grocery trade on Reade Street, corner of Republican Lane, just east of Broadway, at the age of twenty-four, but later he and his brother, James, succeeded their father, William, as flour merchants. This co-partnership was dissolved, and he continued alone for a time. Then, for some years, he was the paying teller of the North River Bank, but during his latter years he withdrew from all active business. As a young man, in 1822, he became a member of Company No. 20, New York Volunteer Fire Department. In appearance he was of medium height, stout, and highly colored complexion.

558 CASPER, son of Cornelius (301), was b. July 5, 1816. He m., first, Hannah Butts, Sept. 20, 1840; and, second, Charlotte C. Briggs, widiw of Daniel H. Carhart, Feb. 18, 1891. A man of handsome visage and physique, served in a number of public offices during his lifetime, and highly esteemed in Dutchess County, N.Y. He d. July 29, 1899.
