553   SHERIFF JACOB, son of William (286), was born at Schraalenburgh, July 27; bap. at the same place, Aug. 3, 1794, Jacob Quackenboss and Lea Christie, his maternal grandparents, being the sponsors. He m. Elizabeth (857), dau. of Jacobus Westervelt (457) and Elizabeth Nagel, at Schraalenburgh, March 21, 1812.
He removed to New York immediately after his marriage and embarked in the grocery trade. As a young man he took an active part in the political life of the day, becoming a member of the Tammany Society. In 1831 he was elected High Sheriff of New York, an office held by him for four years (1831-1834). After retiring from the Shrievalty, he became president of the Lafayette Bank. About this time he purchased a farm at Upper Nyack, N.Y., which was subsequently sold. During the years 1837-8 he was Assistant Alderman of the 9th Ward, and in 1840-41, of the 13th Ward. For a period he was connected with the New York Custom House, and later became a City Weigher. When a resident of Brooklyn he was on the staff of the Department of City Works in that municipality, but during his latter days he retired from general business. He d. in Brooklyn, May 10, 1881, and lies interred, with his wife, Elizabeth, who d. Aug. 2, 1876, in Greenwood.
