550 JOHN SLOAT, M.D., son of Jacobus (285), was b. at Sloatsburg, N.Y., June 15; bap. at Schraalenburg, July 8, 1799. He m. Anna Ellsworth, dau. of the Hon. Daniel D. Tompkins, Governor of the State of New York, 1807-1817, and Vice-President of the United States under the administration of James Monroe, 1817-1825, and Hannah Minthome, his wife, at the residence of his father-in-law, on Staten Island, May 25, 1825. He graduated from Columbia College, and subsequently became the first Health Officer of the Port of New York.
He resided at Tompkinsville, Staten Island, where he d. July 31, 1869.
With the Sloat family, he was also interested in manufacturing cotton cloth at Sloatsburg. In 1839 the firm of J. Sloat & Co. was established, consisting of Stephen and Jacob Sloat, John Quackenbush and John S. Westervelt, and in addition to their former business, the manufacture of cotton tunic was begun.
