412 HONORABLE JACOB AARON, son of Ari (181), was b. at Tenafly, N.J., Jan. 20; bap. at Schraalenburgh, Feb. 16, 1800, being the first child to receive that sacrament after the completion of the new church, erected by his father in 1799. He m. Eliza M. Thompson in New York City, April 25, 1825, and d. Feb 21, 1879. Interred in the family plot, Greenwood Cemetery.
His father was a man of fair means, owning a comfortable homestead and a profitable farm. He received a good education, under the tutelage of James P. Forrester, then head master of the school connected with the Collegiate (Dutch) Church, in New York. The science of navigation, however, was his favorite study, and he soon was afforded greater educational opportunities, under Barron & Brown, in a special course on surveying and navigation. When sixteen years of age he went to sea, serving actively on shipboard for more than two years, but, learning that the life of a sailor was more of reality than romance, forsook the business, and in 1817 became an apprentice under Christian Bergh, the shipbuilder. In 1821 he was a master shipbuilder at Charleston, S.C.; a year afterwards he became a partner with Bergh and Robert Carnley. When about thirty-five years of age,
