returned from Dutchess County prior to this time, he settled at Closter, N.J., a short distance to the east of the present Northern Railroad of New Jersey. This locality was originally in the patent of the Haring family, and may have come to him through the marriage with Jannetje Haring. He d. in September, 1799, in the 78th year of his age. His great-grandson, Jacob Westervelt, sometimes Alderman and High Sheriff of the City of New York, then a boy five years of age, recites the fact that ìthe day was exceedingly hot and the crowd was so great that they were compelled to stand on the lawn in front of his great-grandfatherís house.î
A careful search in the churchyard at Schraalenburgh fails to place his grave among so many of his name who lie there, and as the Haring family had a burying place upon their extensive property, he may have been interred among his wifeís kinfolk.
